As the name implies, condyloma akuminata or genital warts are warts found in the genital area. Warts that can amount to one or a group of these are transmitted from people who have been infected with the human papillomavirus (HPV) virus.
Women are more at risk of having condyloma akuminata than men, with the highest incidence occurring at the age of 15-30 years, especially 20-24 years. Itching in the genital area and bleeding during sexual intercourse are symptoms that may be felt by patients with condyloma akuminata. These warts commonly attack the vaginal area, cervix, perineum, vulva, penis, testicular sac, and skin around the anus. Warts can also appear in the mouth or throat. This condition occurs because of transmission through oral sex. The form of genital warts is a lump of flesh that resembles cauliflower, but is generally small so that it is often invisible.
Who Is More at Risk and Handling It
Most sexually active people have indeed been exposed to at least one type of HPV, but not all of them develop into genital warts. Transmission of condyloma akuminata is through direct physical contact. There are several conditions that can increase the risk of infection, namely:- Sexually active at a young age.
- Multiple sexual partners, especially having sex with someone whose sexual health history is unknown.
- Have suffered from a sexually transmitted disease.
- Relieve itching and pain.
- Reducing the risk of spreading HPV virus.
- Convince patients that the condition they are experiencing is not cancer.
- So that warts that are difficult to disappear by themselves can be removed.
- Medicines, such as:
-Podofilox, applied to warts on the outside of the genitals to stop the growth of wart cells.
-Imiquimod to enhance the body's immune system in fighting infections
-Ointment from sinecatechins (green tea extract) which is applied to the condyloma akuminata around the genitals and anus. - Surgery to remove the wart.
- Freezing condyloma acuminata with liquid nitrogen. This method is called cryosurgery or frozen surgical technique.
- Laser light therapy to destroy condyloma akuminata.
- Electrocautery or cautery is destroying warts with an electric current.
- There are times when drugs such as interferon are injected into warts. However, the effectiveness of interferon as an additional treatment for condyloma akuminata still needs to be further evaluated.
